Psychosocial and Psychoactive Substance Program

Illicit Drug Abuse in Liberia: Overview and Response
Liberia faces a serious drug abuse crisis, affecting roughly 1 million of its 5 million citizens. About 20% of Liberian youth are involved in narcotics, with 4,000–6,000 frequenting open drug-use sites in Monrovia, including 10–20% women, mostly aged 32–36.
Key Challenges:
-
Youth Vulnerability: With 79% of the population aged 15–36, high unemployment and limited education make youth prone to drug use and crime.
-
Commonly Abused Substances: Marijuana (most prevalent), heroin, cocaine (“Italian white”), and synthetic drugs like Kush and amphetamines.
-
Drug Hubs: Monrovia alone has 866 ghettos serving as drug havens, contributing to social instability.
-
Mental Health and Trauma: Substance abuse exacerbates mental health disorders (affecting 10% of the population) and post-war trauma continues to drive addiction.
-
Policy and Enforcement Gaps: Liberia’s porous borders make it a drug transit country; post-war rehabilitation missed addressing addiction among former combatants.
Current Efforts:
The government has declared drugs a national health crisis, passed laws, and partnered with international organizations, though implementation remains limited. Civil society groups, such as Global Action for Sustainable Development (GASD), advocate for policy reform, rehabilitation, and youth programs.

ACOH/CHAM Initiative:
Abehinnyuen Community of Hope (ACOH), Inc. supports national and civil society efforts by providing integrated prevention and treatment programs. These aim to reduce vulnerability, improve self-image, and enable youths and adults affected by civil conflict to engage in psychosocial and economic activities.

YOUTH & YOUNG ADULT PROGRAM
Psychosocial, Psychoactive (Substance Abuse), & Rehabilitation- Re-entry Program

Programs
Psychosocial and Psychoactive Program
Approach:
-
Preventive
-
Treatment
Our program supports vulnerable youth (ages 8–26) in Grand Bassa, Rivercess, and parts of Lower Margibi and Montserrado Counties, aiming to foster strong moral values, self-esteem, and civic responsibility. Through social, educational, and sporting activities, such as soccer, basketball, volleyball, kickball, and scrabble, we engage young people, providing psychosocial support, substance abuse counseling, after-school programs, and computer literacy.
Counseling & Mentorship:
We offer mentorship, substance abuse counseling, de-traumatization, and reintegration services, guiding disadvantaged youth toward productive, fulfilling lives. By combining formal and informal education, our capacity-building program empowers children, adults, and the elderly to realize their potential and become responsible, engaged members of their communities.

Elderly (senior citizens) Program

The vulnerable Senior Citizens (elderly folks) program is aimed at endeavoring to make sure vulnerable elderly/old folks are loved and cared for, and to prevent them the many abuses, including calling them names (“witches”, "witchcraft"), especially those who suffer from Alzheimer’s, Parkinson's and dementia diseases. These diseases are foreign to the Liberians!

Our program is to assist with medical screening and awareness in:
-
High/low blood pressure, diabetes, malaria, typhoid fever, dementia, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's
-
De-traumatization
-
Assist with Homecare supports
-
Assist with food and clothing.
Projected Result
The full implementation of this program will reveal a community of changed and responsible old folks/senior citizens who will live a more like accurate lifestyle by transforming their communities as well. In this light, we will experience a reduced diseases, abuse & abandonment and death among our aged vulnerable population.

Target Population
This program is mainly intended for vulnerable old people between the ages of 65 through 100+.
We use folktales, recreations, feeding, medical screenings and self-esteem as a medium to rehabilitate the vulnerable old people. Together, we can give hope for a better future for our vulnerable old folks/senior citizens.

Recognizing the need for comprehensive academic, pastoral, and ministry training, we collaborate with local and international faith-based institutions to maximize impact.
Abehinny Community, Inc. proudly partners with Grace Bible Faith Community Church of Liberia (GBFCCL) and Christ Evangelistic Liberation (CELL) Ministries. Together, we deliver targeted in-service training programs that empower pastoral and lay personnel, ensuring the sustainability and success of our community initiatives.

AGRICULTURE CLUB

Our Agricultural Program
Farming God’s Way
Farming God’s Way teaches the importance of intentionality and divine guidance in all we do. Just as a farmer carefully prepares and levels the soil for optimal growth, we are called to cultivate our lives with purpose. Through God’s guidance, we learn to plant the right seeds, be it caraway, cumin, wheat, or barley (Isaiah 28:24–26 NIV), to yield a fruitful harvest.

Our program combines sustainable agricultural practices with hunger prevention initiatives, sharing the Gospel of Love while empowering communities. We provide economic services that promote self-sufficiency, resilience, and hope. Join us in transforming lives and cultivating a future where both faith and farming flourish.
